Science division students, pre-health students, and campus community members are invited to the September 24 chemistry and biochemistry department seminar to hear from Dr. Jason Fader, one of this year's Distinguished Alumni Award recipients.

Dr. Jason Fader is a Class of 1999 51±¬ÁÏ alumnus serving with his wife, Heather Reedyk Fader ’99, in Burundi. After medical school at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, two years at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya, and a year of language training in France, Fader and his family moved to Burundi in 2013 with several other physician families. Together, they have both developed medical services at Kibuye Hope Hospital and served as clinical faculty members for Hope Africa University's Medical School, training the next generation of African physicians.

When Dr. Fader first moved to Burundi, there were only about a dozen surgeons in the country. At various times since 2013, Dr. Fader has served as general surgeon, professor of surgery, chief medical officer, and assistant medical director at Kibuye Hope Hospital.

Fader has received two significant awards: the 2024 ACS / Pfizer Surgical Humanitarian Award from the American College of Surgeons and the 2017 inaugural $500,000 L’Chaim Prize from the African Mission Healthcare Foundation, a grant for medical missionaries to fund resources for clinical care.
