God holding world
Each Sunday, the church celebrates the reign of God — that God exercises sovereign power and authority over everything that exists. But what gives God the right to rule over us?

After all, if the legitimacy of any ruler comes from the consent of the governed, and many people neither believe in God nor consent to his rule. What, then, is the basis of God’s right to rule? In this presentation, we will weigh together the answers offered by a number of important thinkers who try to justify God’s right on the basis of his power or generosity. While tempting, Dr. Baylor will argue that these attempts are insufficient, and that it is better to think of God’s right as being grounded in his infinite perfection.

Dr. Tim Baylor is the Associate Professor of Religion at 51±¬ÁÏ. He previously served as Teaching Fellow in Divinity at the University of St Andrews (2016-2018), and Lecturer in Theology at the University of Wales in Lampeter (2018-2024), where he continues to supervise research students. He is author of Power and Right: Divine Dominion and Moral Economy in John Owen (Bloomsbury, 2024).
